Overview

Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.
The Senior Staff Attorney represents victims of domestic violence in family court and matrimonial cases; supervises law students, pro bono attorneys, and junior Legal Center staff on order of protection, custody, visitation, child and spousal support and contested and uncontested divorces. The Senior Staff Attorney empowers domestic violence victims by providing them with comprehensive, compassionate, holistic legal services through direct representation, community education and outreach and policy and systems-change advocacy.

Responsibilities
• Represents victims of domestic violence in Family and Supreme Court in cases including: orders of protection, custody, visitation, child support, spousal support, and matrimonial matters.
• Provides legal assistance and consultations to pro se litigants in family law matters.
• Supervises junior legal staff and/or volunteer attorneys, pro bono attorneys, or project assistants in representation of domestic violence victims in family and supreme court cases, including order of protection, custody, visitation, child support, spousal support, uncontested and contested matrimonial matters.
• Recruits, mentors, trains and supervises law students, volunteers, and pro bono attorneys in matrimonial and family court matters.
• Organizes community efforts to effect policy initiatives and systems changes that benefit domestic violence victims.
• Attends and participates in interagency conferences and legal/ bar association committee meetings to keep abreast of developments in the areas of pro bono, domestic violence, and family law.
• Builds relationships/partnerships with law firms, law schools, and other agencies to strengthen our practice and increase the visibility of Sanctuary for Families in the legal and domestic violence communities.
• Handles a caseload of complex family and matrimonial matters.
• Develops and conducts trainings in the area of family law.
• Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor.

Requirements: 

Qualifications
• J.D. and Admission to the New York State Bar.
• At least five years of legal experience.
• Ability to handle all aspects of complex family law matters.
• Experience working in the domestic violence field.
• Ability to work independently.
• Knowledge of the dynamics of gender-based oppression and a strong motivation to combat gender-based violence.
• Fluency in a second language preferred.
• Prior matrimonial law experience preferred.
• Knowledge of Family Court Act statutes and procedures and the interplay with Domestic Relations Law and CPLR.
