The State Appellate Defender Office is looking for a full-time Legal Assistant/Paralegal for a two-year, grant-supported position with its DNA Project. The DNA Project is an effort that investigates potential wrongful convictions arising out of untested sexual assault kits discovered throughout the state. The Legal Assistant/Paralegal works closely with the Project Attorney out of SADO’s Lansing office.
Essential Job Functions:
Responsibilities:
- Screen and review adjudicated cases.
- General clerical duties such as collecting files and documents, data entry, case organization, and scanning.
- Assesses and develops updates to the existing case management system according to organizational/departmental needs.
- Assists with evidence searches and with preparation of discovery requests and responses, and prepares public records requests.
- Reviews and analyzes factual background of cases, including police reports, lab reports, prior motions and case files; develops a working knowledge of DNA testing.
- Drafts correspondence to prosecutors, prison officials and clients.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and general office equipment.

Qualifications & Experience:
- An Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or equivalent.
- A minimum of 1 year of legal assistant/paralegal experience in a law office, court or other legal setting.
Competencies, Skills and Abilities:
- High level of proficiency in administrative work and office management.
- Flexible and collaborative work style and ability to function effectively in a demanding environment.
- Excellent skills in organization, planning, and attention to detail.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
