This Month's Third Thursday will be hosted on July 17 from 1:30- 2:30 p.m. Jim Manning will be our presenter on the topic of the importance of local political engagement. Please see further details on the presentation, Jim, and where to register below. We look forward to seeing you there!!
Topic Description:
Structural change related to social justice and unjust systems is most often regulated and driven by locally elected officials. In fact, many meaningful opportunities for real change occur at the local level—making it a powerful space where we can channel our energy to address the anxiety and frustration we feel about our broader political landscape.
Too often, efforts to achieve structural change focus solely on Washington, D.C. However, with over 500,000 elected officials in the United States—and less than one-tenth of one percent serving at the federal level—the local level holds immense untapped potential for impact.
This month’s session will explore how NASAMS practitioners can leverage their expertise in human services and rapport-building to influence, shape, and advance social justice through local advocacy and structural change efforts.
Jim's Bio:
After a fulfilling first career as a social worker and state government administrator in Columbia, SC, Jim began trying to retire. Instead, he spent another decade working full-time with a public health nonprofit. Following what he calls his “third and hopefully final career,” Jim launched Gray Hair Solutions LLC—an eclectic consulting venture offering “conundrum alleviation.”
Jim has also served as an Adjunct College Professor and was elected to three terms (12 years) on the Richland County Council. Drawing on master’s degrees in Social Work and Public Administration, along with decades of wide-ranging professional experience, Jim approaches each new opportunity with eagerness, passion, and curiosity.
He finds balance and joy in life through long-distance running, his church community, sightseeing adventures, and quality time with his adored wife of 42 years, Mrs. Manning, Ph.D. He also enjoys the daily antics of their Cockapoo puppy, Gigi Camaro—and, of course, a healthy dose of pondering awe and wonderment.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
