Summary: Strategic, results-oriented role supporting Covington's internationally recognized pro bono program, through which the Firm provides legal assistance to economically-disadvantaged individuals and seeks to expand access to justice. The Pro Bono Attorney will work closely with the Pro Bono Counsel, Deputy Pro Bono Counsel, and other members of the Pro Bono Team to maximize the program’s benefit to pro bono clients and the Firm, with a particular focus on supporting high levels of participation in the Firm’s California offices and managing US-wide engagement in immigration matters. This is a non-practicing, full-time position resident in the Firm’s San Francisco office.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Source pro bono matters responsive to the legal needs of underserved communities and interests of individual attorneys in the Firm’s California offices and for the Firm’s US-wide pro bono immigration practice.
Interface with and respond to legal services providers referring pro bono matters and individuals contacting the Firm for pro bono assistance.
Develop and maintain close relationships with the community of legal services providers referring matters to the Firm.
Ensure that new pro bono matters are evaluated, screened for conflicts of interest, staffed with appropriate teams, and approved for representation.
Meet with attorneys in the Firm’s California offices to understand and track their areas of pro bono interest in order to more effectively match pro bono opportunities.
Serve as an information resource for attorneys handling pro bono matters.
Develop and maintain immigration-related resources; track emerging developments in immigration practice to support attorneys handling these matters and to inform training and risk management.
Coordinate pro bono partnerships with Firm fee-generating clients, under direction of Pro Bono Counsel and relevant relationship partners.
Maintain internal workflow systems and pro bono database, including detailed and accurate records of the Firm’s pro bono representations, attorney profiles, and knowledge management resources.
Manage transition of pro bono matters for departing attorneys in the Firm’s California offices, and coordinate with the broader Pro Bono Team to ensure adequate restaffing of immigration matters across US offices.
Organize pro bono trainings and other events related to the Firm’s pro bono program.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Uphold high standards of confidentiality, discretion, and integrity, particularly with respect to all sensitive and/or confidential firm and client information to which this position will have access.
JD required.
At least five years of experience in a legal setting, with at least three of those years in immigration practice in the private, public, or non-profit sector.
Active California Bar membership required.
Familiarity and relationships with legal services and public interest organizations.
Experience managing or engaging with law firm pro bono programs or volunteers preferred but not required.
Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.
Strong organizational skills and impeccable attention to detail.
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to adapt to change and balance competing demands.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a collegial team, with the initiative to independently manage responsibilities and advance projects.
Excellent judgment, including knowing when to escalate an issue.
