Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney for its Salem office. This is a grant-funded position of limited duration, currently expected to last through December 2017. Renewal of grant funding is possible but not certain.
Background
LASO is a non-profit organization that represents low-income clients in civil cases. LASO’s eight regional offices serve the general low-income population throughout the state and two specialized statewide programs provide services to farmworkers and representation on Native American issues. LASO is an effective, high-quality legal services program committed to advocacy strategies that will have a demonstrable effect on community problems.
The Salem office provides advice and representation to low-income residents in Marion and Polk counties.
Responsibilities
The staff attorney will focus on assisting victims of domestic violence and elder abuse. In addition to serving individual clients, attorneys are expected to spend significant time working on cases or projects designed to achieve broad impact upon significant problems in the client community. Services may include family and elder protection orders; divorce; child support and custody issues; housing; unemployment benefits; immigration; and other civil legal issues. The attorney will also conduct outreach and education to low-income client groups with a special emphasis on elders, people with disabilities and Latinos.
Current Oregon State Bar membership required; excellent legal skills; demonstrated commitment to working with the victims of domestic violence and elder abuse; ability to interact appropriately and effectively with victims and other clients. Spanish language ability and cultural competency are required for this position.
