Client & Community Advocate Monthly Meeting Recap

On October 6, NLADA’s  Client & Community Advocate Monthly Meeting brought together advocates for a discussion on federal policy changes, legislative developments, anddevelopments, and the experiences of individuals navigating the justice system.

The meeting explored changes under H.R.1, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, including new restrictions affecting Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage for certain lawfully present immigrants. Participants also discussed changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), including increased state administrative costs, and the potential impact of new work requirements and other policy changes on individuals and families. Client and community advocates shared perspectives on how these developments are affecting the communities they serve.

NLADA Policy Staff Member LuTisha Buckner provided a legislative update, highlighting federal appropriations negotiations, the December 11 funding deadline, and the possibility of a lame-duck congressional session following the mid-term elections. The meeting also featured Krystyne Kiogima of Michigan Indian Legal Services, a Client and Community Advocate Fellow, who shared her personal experience as a witness to a crime. Her reflections sparked a meaningful conversation about the challenges individuals face when navigating the justice system and the importance of creating more informed, supportive, and community-centered experiences.

Throughout the meeting, participants also reinforced the value of centering lived experience in policy discussions and strengthening advocacy through shared knowledge and community perspectives.

Join us on the first Tuesday of each month in a dedicated space for client leaders and advocates to stay informed on federal policy and legislative developments, discuss emerging issues, share advocacy priorities, and learn from one another.
