The Farmworker Law Project provides free legal assistance to farmworkers statewide. Its office is located in New Paltz, NY, but staff make regular visits to rural areas where farmworkers live and work across the state. This position is for a community legal educator for farmworkers and requires overnight travel twice a month during the growing and harvesting seasons. Non-travel weeks include outreach 1-2 evenings a week.
Farmworkers are essential to harvest New York’s fruits, vegetables, and other plants; they also work with livestock, in dairies and fresh food packaging and processing plants. The position’s focus is to provide community legal education at migrant labor camps to farmworkers during evening hours and develop educational materials for the workers. The Farmworker Law Project’s practice primarily involves employment law, utilizing state and federal laws regulating wages, working conditions, safety, and housing for migrant farmworkers. The Farmworker Law Project (FLP) also represents some agricultural product processing workers with employment-related issues. FLP is committed to high quality representation of farmworker clients and offers an opportunity to do challenging work with committed colleagues.

Bi-weekly travel trips and evening work is required.
Works independently to gather information.
Maintains records in the office case management system.
Under attorney supervision, interviews clients, collects and documents evidence.
Provides litigation support for cases, as a part of a team.
Works collaboratively with other groups serving farmworkers.
Fluency in oral English and Spanish required.
Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
Good writing skills.
Good computer skills.
Proven ability to learn quickly and relate well to people who are low-income or of different nationalities and cultures.
Demonstrated past commitment to advocacy work is preferred.
