Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA), a non-profit law firm, seeks a Staff Attorney to join the Employment Team in El Paso, Texas.

TRLA’s Employment Team advocates for and represents workers in a wide variety of industries, including workers involved in domestic work, restaurants, hospitality, home health care, warehouses, construction, and landscaping.

Much of the Employment Team’s work consists of litigation in federal court, including enforcement of rights under the minimum wage and overtime law, laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, sex, national origin, age, religion, disability, LGBTQ+ status or gender identity, the Family and Medical Leave Act, laws protecting whistleblowers and workers who complain about unsafe and unlawful working conditions, and human trafficking laws. The Employment Team also represents clients in state and federal administrative proceedings.

The Staff Attorney will carry an individual caseload which includes litigation, representation of clients in administrative proceedings, and counseling and advising applicants for legal services. The attorney will also assist with community outreach and educational presentations.

Compensation and Benefits:   

Salary is commensurate with experience and includes an excellent fringe benefits package, including law school loan repayment, generous paid leave, healthcare insurance, a retirement plan, and training & travel stipends.

Requirements: 

Qualifications and Preferences:

Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to the rights of low-income immigrant communities or workers’ rights. The attorney must be culturally competent including understanding the unique needs of low-wage workers. The ideal applicant

Proficiency in spoken and written Spanish strongly preferred 

Experience in employment law or workers’ rights preferred 

Excellent and independently-driven case development, legal research and writing skills 

Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability advocate with governmental and other non-profit or social service agencies 

Ability to interact compassionately and effectively with clients and applicants for legal services

Ability to effectively manage a moderate-volume individual caseload  

Ability to think creatively, systemically and with a willingness to implement unconventional strategies; preferred experience with large-scale impact advocacy 

Experience working with diverse populations, including communities of color, people living with disabilities or non-English-speaking and migrant communities 

Connection to or experience working in TRLA’s service area and on the Texas-Mexico border is preferred
