Staff Attorney | Veteran Advocacy Project
TRLA SERVICE AREA (EXCLUDING EL PASO)

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) seeks a full-time staff attorney for our Veterans Advocacy Project. The staff attorney will provide extended civil services to veterans in a wide range of civil legal matters including housing, probate, benefits, consumer, employment, homelessness, and family law. The principal requirement for client eligibility, other than being low-income, is that the client be a veteran, spouse, or dependent of a veteran.

The attorney will provide direct legal services to those who are eligible, and will collaborate closely with community partners, including veteran service organizations, Department of Veteran Affairs medical facilities, and service providers for veterans living in homelessness.

Duties and Responsibilities:

A successful Veterans Advocacy Project staff attorney must be self-directed, empathetic, and motivated. Among other duties, the attorney will: 

Evaluate clients' claims and assess civil legal remedies.

Provide direct representation to clients in all stages of litigation and in all forms of advocacy.

Provide counsel to individuals seeking civil legal assistance.

Establish and maintain relationships with community partners to ensure integrated services and address systemic barriers facing veterans.

Support civil legal services for veterans throughout the 68-county TRLA service area.

Participate, organize, and lead education and outreach efforts to community about legal issues confronted by low-income veterans and their families.

Compensation and Benefits:  

Salary is commensurate with experience and includes an excellent fringe benefits package, including law school loan repayment, generous paid leave, healthcare insurance, a retirement plan, and training & travel stipends.

Requirements: 

Qualifications and Preferences:

TRLA is seeking candidates who are committed to providing justice for those who need it most.

JD from accredited university.

Must be licensed to practice law in Texas or willing to take the next available Texas bar exam.

Dedication to and experience in serving low-income populations.

Experience working with veterans.

Experience working with community services/partners.

Fluent in English and Spanish, written and spoken.
