The South Central Pension Rights Project Paralegal is expected to fulfill the mission of Texas Legal Services Center and the Pension Counseling and Information Program described in the U.S. Older Americans Act (42 U.S.C. 3020e-1) by providing paralegal and administrative support for the pension counseling and information services provided to participants and beneficiaries of employer sponsored pension and retirement savings plans in the geographic area that our Program covers.

This is a grant funded position.

Essential Functions:

Assisting the Managing Attorney with a range of direct and often detailed legal advocacy and other investigative and support services up to and through administrative pension claim and appeal proceedings, short of representation in court and formal litigation, including:

o Completing intake duties including responding to calls, online inquiries, and online chats from the low-income population in need of these legal services.
o Conducting issue-spotting during intake processes and pre-acceptance screening assessments, while ensuring appropriate information is collected and entered in the case management system, and client confidentiality requirements are maintained.
o Performing research, needed factual investigations and analysis, communicating with third parties, and assisting in drafting, revising, and filing legal documents.
o Corresponding with clients, court administrative staff, and other interested parties.
o Ensuring that all appointments and deadlines are calendared and timely executed with sufficient time dedicated to management approval of legal documents.
o Traveling to meetings and courts as needed.

Assisting in the drafting and presentation of outreach, including travel to outreach events as needed.
Keeping informed of community resources currently available to ensure clients are referred to the appropriate source.
Assisting in the drafting and submission of grant and other program reports and documents.
Cultivating working relationships and helping coordinate projects, both internally and with other organizations and agencies, to advance programmatic and organizational goals, and keeping track of project deadlines and milestones to ensure projects are completed on time and to the highest of standards.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements: 

Competencies:

Bi-lingual in Spanish and English, written and oral, preferred.
Experience working with Adobe, Microsoft Planner, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive.
High level organizational skills.
Excellent listening, verbal, and written communications skills.
Strong time management and attention to detail skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook).
Outstanding interpersonal and collaboration skills.
Proficiency in or ability to learn LegalServer (TLSC’s case management system).
Ability to work with clients in a patient, trauma-informed, and non-judgmental manner.
Ability to travel within the Austin area.

Minimum Education and Experience:

High school graduation or equivalent.
Paralegal certificate from an accredited institution or minimum 1 year of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant.
Licensure and/or Certification (Preferred): Paralegal certificate from an accredited paralegal training program.

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time.
Occasional bending, squatting, and kneeling.
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force as needed, at times to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
