Hiring Staff Attorney-Hazard

AppalReD Legal Aid has an opening in its Hazard Office for a staff attorney focusing on providing civil legal help to victims of the catastrophic July 2022 flood in eastern Kentucky. Come work with great people who work hard to better the lives of low-income and vulnerable individuals in our communities. AppalReD Legal Aid’s team of nearly 60 staff and attorneys across six offices provide legal help to over 10,000 people across 37 counties yearly.

Be a part of a committed passionate non-profit law firm that seeks to expand equal access to justice across Appalachian Kentucky, while understanding the value of work-life balance. AppalReD Legal Aid was founded over 50 years ago and has a proud history of making a difference for the low-income people of our state.

Work independently and as part of a team to obtain positive results for clients with a focus on civil law matters in disaster recovery including areas such as housing issues, heir property and title clearing, FEMA appeals, insurance claims, and consumer fraud. This role will work alongside the disaster legal services team, including two disaster legal services paralegals and a Disaster Legal Services Project Director/Attorney, to advocate and help educate community members on opportunities such as rebuild efforts, public benefits assistance, and other recovery and preventative measures.

Requirements:

Applicants should have a strong interest in serving the civil legal needs of low-income people and crime victims, a special desire to work in a rural area, and a particular interest in the problems of Appalachia. A background in disaster legal services is not necessary as long as the candidate has a willingness to learn. Mentorship and training is available for interested candidates.

License to practice law in Kentucky or eligibility for admission is preferred, but recent law school graduates will be considered.

The compensation package includes salary depending on experience and a generous benefits package that encourage work-life balance, including:
• 13 paid holidays
• 15 sick days
• 15 vacation days (increases to 20 in year 3)
• Compensatory Time for essential, required work done in excess of the 37 1/2 hour work week, up to a total of 100 hours per year
• Loan Repayment Assistance
• County Employees Retirement System with Kentucky Public Pensions Authority
• Health insurance monthly premiums covered at up to 95%
• 100% covered dental and vision monthly premiums
• Payment of bar dues and one section membership
• Bar Examination Preparation Leave of fifteen days
• Mileage paid at the federal rate of 65.5 cents per mile
• Employer paid life insurance policy of $50,000
