Position Description: 

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit regional law firm that provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income people and groups in western Ohio, seeks a resourceful, culturally competent, hardworking Supervising Attorney for the Housing and Community Economic Development and Meaningful and Appropriate Education Practice Groups. This position will be based out of the Toledo office.

The Supervising Attorney is a leadership position within the firm, and expectations include that the supervising attorney will:

•Take an active role in working towards achieving racial equity and creating an environment that has a diverse and inclusive culture
•Assist the managing attorney in mentoring and managing staff attorneys
•Expand ABLE’s housing and community economic development capacity in the Toledo area and capacity for creative legal representation of parents/children for education justice (including litigation, administrative advocacy, and policy campaigns), using ABLE’s community lawyering approach to service delivery
•Engage with client groups of directly impacted Toledo residents and support other attorneys using the same community lawyering approach
•Undertake projects in the following areas in addition to their primary roles of supervising legal work and representing clients: community relations; office administration and oversight; and grant and contract drafting, implementation, compliance, and reporting.
•Contribute constructively to the firm’s decision-making process
•Help leadership identify and address organizational issues in an open and constructive manner
•Promote the improvement and effectiveness of the program and implement initiatives

Requirements: 

•Licensed attorney who is admitted to the Ohio Bar or able to be admitted by motion or passage of the next available bar examination
•Minimum of three (3) years of legal experience
•Previous legal services and litigation experience
•An understanding of and commitment to community lawyering
•Personable and dependable, competent, loyal, and trustworthy
•Possess demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and administrative abilities
•Able to exercise sound judgment and initiative
•Must have excellent legal skills and excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong computer skills
•Must be able to provide constructive contributions to the overall management and administration of the program with a demonstrated commitment to racial equity, diversity and an inclusive work environment
•Skilled in the substance of poverty law as well as advocacy skills and strategies
•Commitment to ABLE’s mission and to ABLE’s clients and client communities
•Ability to mentor, coach, encourage, motivate, and work effectively with staff in both remote and in-office environments
•Supportive of and ability to work with diverse staff in an inclusive, collaborative environment, while promoting racial equity
•Ability to deal with clients in a professional and friendly manner
•Ability to work effectively in a team oriented, collaborative decision-making environment, solve problems, and resolve conflicts
•Enthusiasm for challenging work and opportunities
•Ability to adapt to changing environment whether working remote or in an office environment

Salary range: 
$74,123-$99,000
