Director of Litigation - Remote
Legal Advocacy & Policy · Portland, Oregon (Remote)
Compassion & Choices is seeking a Director of Litigation to help advance our advocacy, medical outreach and education efforts across the country.

This position is primarily responsible for advancing litigation within the Legal & Policy Department, a small but vibrant team of eight attorneys and two support staff responsible for affirmative litigation, legislative lawyering and policy development. Our litigation includes all aspects of end-of-life care with a particular focus on fundamental constitutional issues related to maintaining bodily autonomy in both state and federal courts.

This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned, entrepreneurial legal professional who has an interest in helping to shape a more equitable, patient-directed end-of-life healthcare system. The subject matter is often emotionally-charged and controversial and routinely faces forceful opposition. The ideal candidate must be comfortable working in collaboration with other program staff, outside counsel, and stakeholders who come from different walks of life and hold differing political views.

This is a full-time, remotely-located (Portland-preferred), salaried position reporting to the Chief Legal Advocacy Officer & General Counsel. Compensation offered will be commensurate with experience.

We offer excellent benefits including employer-shared medical and dental insurance premiums, employer-paid short- and long-term disability, life and accidental death & dismemberment insurance, flexible spending account for medical and child care, commuter pre-tax benefit, eligibility to participate in 401K with generous 5% employer match and 100% vested at time of eligibility, 12 paid holidays, 17 PTO days first year, and personal days.

This position is primarily responsible for:

Implement our strategic vision by engaging in high quality impact litigation;

Work independently in a collaborative environment and under sometimes extreme time pressures, including working long hours as priorities require;
Monitor industry and litigation activity with potential impact on organizational goals.
Develop and manage department metrics;
Calmly manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
Develop and enforce the implementation of team standard operating procedures in accordance with best practices;
Empower team members and guide career development;
Provide leadership for litigation staff, including coaching, development, support, work prioritization, performance management, morale, retention and recruiting of top talent;
Interact with all levels of the organization; must be able to share organization’s vision and develop and deliver supporting plans;
Develop and prepare reports and dashboards to feature the team’s work;
Oversee the design and conduct of training sessions for internal and external users as needed;
Partner with staff to ensure consistency of litigation content across all internal and external channels;
Serve as a representative for litigation work as assigned.
Participate in trainings designed to foster best practices across, and a sense of belonging within, the organization.
Support of all C&C efforts as requested; including, but not limited to, activities such as identifying prospects, briefing donors, alerting staff of fundraising opportunities, reaching out to donors, participating in phone-athons, etc.
Timely and accurate completion of related reports (such as company credit card statements, performance reviews, time cards, etc.).
