AppalReD Legal Aid is recruiting for a Disaster Response Attorney in its Hazard Office. For over 50 years, this well-established legal services program has been serving low-income and other vulnerable clients in a 37-county area, which includes the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky and rolling hills of south-central Kentucky. AppalReD Legal Aid operates a network of 5 field offices with a staff of 28 attorneys, 5 paralegals, and supporting personnel. Each office has facilities and the equipment to permit the staff to function as a first-class law firm.
This position will focus on the civil legal needs of individuals impacted by the July 2022 flooding. AppalReD Legal Aid staff attorneys are generalists who handle varied caseloads in traditional poverty law areas like family law, housing, consumer, public benefits, and expungement. This position’s focus will lead to more work in areas such as FEMA appeals, contractor disputes, bankruptcy, and real estate transactions. Staff attorneys are also expected to assist with community legal education and outreach and to work with community groups.
Applicants should have a strong interest in serving the civil legal needs of low-income people, working in a rural area, and in the problems of Appalachia. License to practice law in Kentucky or eligibility for admission is preferred, but May 2023 law school graduates will be considered. The compensation package includes salary depending on experience and a generous benefits package including participation in a state pension plan and student loan repayment assistance. As examples, a recent law school graduate would receive $49,883 per year plus benefits while an attorney with ten qualifying years of experience would receive $67,634 per year plus benefits.
