Position Description: 

The Oklahoma Indigent Defense System (OIDS) is a state agency responsible for implementing the Indigent Defense Act by providing trial, appellate and post-conviction criminal defense services to persons who have been judicially determined to be entitled to legal counsel.

OIDS is currently seeking a full-time Mitigation Specialist in our Capital Trial Tulsa Division, located in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

Basic Purpose

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated; detail oriented; well-organized; communicate well with others; willing to travel throughout Oklahoma and elsewhere; be willing to work long hours; be proficient with computers; have excellent people-skills; be able to maintain confidential information; and have a commitment to excellent representation of indigent clients.

Job Duties

Assist Capital Counsel attorneys in coordinating investigations and presentation of mitigation evidence in capital cases.
Locate, obtain, review, and organize all available defendant records including criminal, psychological and social histories ahead of trial.
Review all police reports, witness statements, crime scene examinations, lab reports, autopsy reports, and any additional documentation to assist in capital trial cases.
Locate potential witnesses, conduct professional investigative interviews, submit accurate interview reports to other members of the defense team, and facilitate preparation and service of subpoenas to necessary witnesses.
Cultivate and maintain long-term relationships with clients and their families and communicate professionally to elicit information regarding their case.
Aid the entire defense team through all phases of court proceedings including consultation concerning effectiveness of witnesses, transportation of witnesses and evidence, finding and reading case law and statutes as directed by attorneys, observes witnesses and jurors both inside and outside of the court room.
Collaborate with members of the defense team to identify and consult with expert witnesses including psychologists, psychiatrists and other specialized experts.
Conducts thorough investigations of the background, character and involvement of both defense and prosecution witnesses in a professional and ethical manner.
Submits accurate and concise reports of the results of investigations.

Level Descriptor

Positions may be filled at Levels I - III, depending on candidate experience.

Salary commensurate with qualifications and within agency salary schedule.

Education and Experience

Persons with experience in criminal investigation, social work, teaching/special education, journalism, psychology and counseling, or probation and parole are encouraged to apply.
