Position Description: 

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) is seeking a responsible undergraduate student to work in our Minneapolis office. Looking to hire 1-2 individuals. These positions require a minimum of 10 hours per week for the full semester. Typically mid-January through April. This position may require some in-person duties.

BACKGROUND: MMLA's mission is to advocate for the legal rights of disadvantaged people to have safe, healthy, and independent lives in their communities. MMLA provides civil legal representation to clients with low incomes and seniors in 21 counties in central Minnesota, and to people with disabilities throughout the state. MMLA receives funding from a variety of public and private sources and enjoys strong support from the organized bar.

RESPONSIBILITIES: MMLA is looking for an undergraduate to help our attorneys with a variety of office management, research, document organization, template drafting, and outreach tasks. Specific duties may include:

Apply the principles of MMLA's Racial Justice Values Statement in all interactions.

Develop and organize a brief bank or sample document bank for use by attorneys.

Identify and attend outreach opportunities.

Create Power Point presentations for community education.

Limited non-legal research projects.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the needs of low-income/vulnerable clients.

Proficiency using Microsoft Office.

Excellent attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and oral and written communication skills.

Ability to handle a variety of assignments while building collaborative relationships with clients, staff, and the community.

Diverse economic, social, or cultural experiences preferred.

Second language proficiency, especially Arabic, Hmong, Somali, or Spanish, preferred.

PAY: These positions are not paid. Please consider work-study if you are eligible. All positions could also be for credit in partnership with your school.
