Legal Aid Society of Rockland County, Inc. (LASRC) seeks an empathetic admitted lawyer, law graduate, or a certified paralegal for its office in New City, New York to provide assistance to individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS on a broad range of legal issues. Duties include client interviews and follow-up, working collegially with various agencies to allocate funds to clients when needed, either representing (for attorneys) or working with advocates in LASRC’s office to represent (for paralegals/law graduates) clients in legal proceedings (primarily housing, disability, and public benefits), and the preparation, retention, and submission of extensive reports to the external program administrator.
Qualifications. All applicants must have:
1. Excellent organizational and writing skills;
2. Commitment to public interest law;
3. Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, with experience in EShare a plus;
4. Commitment to fighting racism and all other forms of oppression.
5. Interest in and willingness to represent individual clients as well as address systemic issues;
6. Admitted attorneys must be admitted to the New York State Bar. Law graduates must have a J.D. (Juris Doctor) from an accredited law school. Paralegals must be certified by the Empire State Alliance of Paralegal Associations (ESAPA) or satisfy the qualifications and one of the Experience/Educational requirements for certification by ESAPA, as listed at https://www.empirestateparalegals.org/certification-nyscp/.
Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Yiddish is a plus, but not required.
Program Profile: Rockland County is a suburban region located 30 miles northwest of New York City. LASRC has represented income-eligible clients in civil cases since its inception in 1965 and has represented children in family court since 1989. Salary and Benefits for Admitted Lawyers: Salary: $57,358 for newly admitted attorneys, up to $108,510 DOE. Generous benefits package.
Salary and Benefits for Certified Paralegals/Law Graduates: Salary: $38,233-$64,415, DOE. Generous benefits package.
