Position Description: 

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (Legal Aid) is seeking a full-time Managing Attorney to lead the Housing Unit in its Minneapolis office. The Minneapolis Housing Unit consists of about 20 staff positions. It defends hundreds of eviction actions per year and represents tenants in affirmative actions to combat housing discrimination and secure their rights to healthy and safe homes. This position will start as soon as possible after an offer is extended.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Supervise 7-10 direct reports

· Apply the principles of Legal Aid's Racial Justice Values Statement in all interactions

· Manage supervisors, attorneys and other staff representing low-income renters in Hennepin County to prevent evictions, ensure healthy and safe rental homes, preserve housing subsidies, and fight housing discrimination

· Report to the Deputy Director of the Minneapolis office

· Work with the Deputy Director and the Minneapolis housing team to craft internal policies, foster a dynamic and supportive team environment, and engage in long-term planning

· Work with a grants manager to develop plans for grant and funding applications, meet with funders, help draft grant applications, and assist with grant reporting

· Engage in partnerships with community organizations and other legal service providers on housing issues

· Engage in local and state policy advocacy in the areas of housing stability, eviction, health and safety, and more

· Represent MMLA in external communications with courts and media about housing issues

· Identify appropriate targets of impact litigation and lead litigation teams

· Guide attorneys through litigation and other casework

· Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications

· Must be licensed to practice law in Minnesota or eligible for admission by reciprocity

· Must have at least three years of supervisory experience supervising staff, with preference given to direct supervision of legal work

· Demonstrated successful experience with conflict resolution and analysis (problem assessment, solution generation) using consultation and influencing skills.

· Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the needs of people with low incomes and other vulnerable clients

· Commitment to working as a team member to serve clients’ needs

· Desire to manage impact litigation

· Ability to mentor attorneys and staff to achieve excellent client representation

· Excellent analytical and written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

· Legal training, knowledge of community resources, and experience with case management software

· Experience representing tenants in eviction proceedings or other similar poverty law discipline

· Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences

SALARY: $81,726 to $100,673 per year, depending on experience, plus benefits. Benefits include family medical and dental insurance, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, 403(b) with employer match, FSA, employee assistance programs, and generous paid time off.
