Position Description:

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm on Skid Row. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, people with disabilities, and homeless veterans.

Position Description: ICLC seeks a dynamic attorney and manager to lead a team of attorneys and support staff providing high-quality legal services to help homeless veterans with disabilities access critical income-support benefits. The Director will carry a caseload and will supervise a team of eight lawyers, two paralegals, and one project coordinator directly representing veterans throughout Los Angeles County in VA disability benefits, military discharge upgrades, and traffic ticket cases. The Directing Attorney will provide substantive legal support to the team, be the lead in furthering relationships with current and new funders and ensuring compliance with grants, and coordinate the various aspects of the entire team’s work. The Director will help the team identify systemic problems within the VA benefits process and develop strategies to resolve them. The Director will work closely with our partners at housing, homeless, and veterans service organizations to build their capacity to develop and implement homelessness prevention strategies for their clients. The Director will serve as an integral part of ICLC's management team and will work closely with the directors of ICLC's other projects and with pro bono counsel. The Director will serve as ICLC's ambassador to community organizations and government agencies and perform other duties as needed.

Hiring Criteria: Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. At least five years of experience in VA benefits work. Experience training and supervising legal staff.

Excellent communication, teaching, and negotiation skills. Innovative and solution oriented. Ability to interact with a wide range of clients utilizing client-centered lawyering and trauma-informed frameworks. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently and as part of a team. Experience with conflict resolution. Ability to use good judgment, multitask and meet deadlines. Ability to work productively with pro bono co-counsel. Access to reliable transportation. Must be eligible to practice law in California —unless you are eligible to practice as a Registered Legal Aid Attorney under Rule 9.45 of the California Rules of Court.
