Position Description: 

What You’ll Do
• Responsible for the directing attorneys, paralegals, and interns
• Serve as liaison between attorneys and Chiefs by keeping communication open between all parties
• Provide active hands-on and/or remote supervision and support to those unit attorneys both in /out of the courtroom
• Train and encourage unit attorneys in the use of effective organizational and time management skills
• Meet with unit attorneys weekly to review case prep, courtroom advocacy, return work, interviews, and referrals
• Promote communication between attorneys & other units to create positive interunit and office working environment
• Create and lead practical and useful trainings based on feedback and observations
• Coordinate and host morale boosting events for all members of the unit
• Review/evaluate a large number of initial interviews, referrals, and both preliminary hearing and trial files at various stages from arrest through completion
• Provide ongoing and constant feedback to unit attorneys
• Manage and maintain personal caseload with eye towards development of attorneys within unit
• Handle court lists regularly within schedule as needed
• Assist in the development & implementation of a unified and comprehensive training program for attorneys at all
• Participate in management trainings as requested to build individual skill levels
• Assist the Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs with attorney reviews and annual performance evaluations of attorneys
• Encourage positive communication and ongoing collaboration among the unit
• Support a work environment that enhances the professional development of all unit staff
• Initiate unit-wide trainings to improve the overall knowledge and performance of all staff
• Create and maintain a harmonious and professional team-oriented work environment
• Assist the Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs with supervision and training of the paralegals regarding conflicts, interviewing, investigations, and etc.
• Assist the Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs with supervision and training of any interns in the unit

Requirements: 

• Juris Doctor degree and admission to the PA Bar
• Minimum 3 years Defender experience
• Completed Jury ready/Jury Demand rotation preferred
• Significant knowledge of the law and procedures in the representation of MC clients
• Experience in or demonstrated interest in training, teaching or mentoring
• Ability to maintain confidentiality consistent with HR policy and procedure
• Ability to adapt to changing administrative needs of MC and the Defender Association
• Ability to work extended hours when needed
• Must be able to travel to courtrooms, local and statewide prisons/facilities if needed
• Requires full Covid vaccination or approved exemption request
