Position Description:

The Federal Public Defender (Eugene Branch) is accepting applications for a full-time Assistant Investigator or Investigator
(depending on qualifications and experience) to support zealous advocacy for indigent defendants charged in federal cases assigned to the Eugene Branch.
Duties:
• Assist attorneys with client contact. Inform clients of case status and court appearances. Answer general inquiries according to office policy.
• Assist with bail hearings.
• Participate in case management functions, calendar, and docket control.
• Support attorneys with reviewing and analyzing discovery and other case documentation.
• Develop investigation plans and identify areas for investigation.
• Locate, view, photograph, and retrieve evidence.
• Gather and maintain records.
• Investigate the client’s background for mitigation. When appropriate, prepare a mitigation report for submission to the prosecutor or court.
• Assist attorneys at hearings and trials by evaluating testimony and coordinating witnesses and documents.
• Interview expert and fact witnesses.
• Provide litigation and general case support, including managing and analyzing paper documents and their scanned paper equivalents, managing and analyzing electronically stored information, and preparing electronic courtroom presentations for hearings or trial, including by:
• Utilizing litigation support software such as OneNote, CaseMap, TimeMap, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Professional, and Excel, to aid in pre-trial preparation and courtroom presentations.
• Recommending additions and modifications to current tools and assessing newly implemented technology and work flow processes.

Requirements: 

• Demonstrated exceptional organizational skills.
• Strong technological, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.
• Three years of general experience in the legal industry or a similar field.
o Specialized experience performing duties consistent with a criminal defense investigator position, regardless of job title will determine starting grade.
• A general understanding of criminal law and federal criminal procedure.
o Specialized experience working for the Federal Public Defender, Criminal Justice Act panel attorneys, private federal criminal defense attorneys, and/or the federal court is preferred.
o Experience investigating charges of different types and complexity is preferred.
• A demonstrated commitment to and comfort working with diverse communities and with people from a range of backgrounds is preferred.
• Spanish language skills are preferred.
• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.

Notes: 
This is a full-time position with federal judiciary salary and benefits based on qualifications and experience. The starting salary ranges from $35,265 to $53,433 (JSP 5 to 9) for Assistant Investigators, $64,649 to $108,885 (JSP 11 to 14) for Investigators based on experience and with promotion potential. Current federal employees are subject to Grade and Step matching rules per Judiciary policy. Compensation also includes 10 paid federal holidays, 13 paid sick days annually, and 13 paid vacation days annually (to start), health insurance, life insurance, retirement contribution, and the Thrift Savings Plan.
