Position Description: 

Join Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provides a wide-range of legal services aimed to address issues that disproportionately impact the poor. These services include direct legal services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, providing training and technical assistance, and community outreach and education via clinics and other workshops.

NLSLA is seeking a bilingual paralegal for its Workers’ Rights team, initially focusing on unemployment compensation and eventually expanding to general workers’ rights. The candidate must have a passion and commitment to serving the low-income community, as well as the limited-English proficient Asian & Pacific Islander community. The ideal candidate must possess strong written and oral communication skills; be organized and detail-oriented; and be self-motived, takes initiative, ability to learn quickly, and have the ability to work as part of a collaborative team. Travel within LA County may be required.

Position: Paralegal, Workers’ Rights

Availability: Position available immediately

Compensation: Salary starting at $37,828. Salary commensurate with experience. Excellent Benefits, which include choice of medical, dental, vision; life and disability insurance plans; 125 plan; 403(b) with employer contribution; student loan reimbursement; bilingual pay supplement; sick and vacation pay; and 13 employer-paid holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for working collaboratively with Workers’ Right team. Engage in community outreach; build relationships with community based organizations; schedule and coordinate clinics; conduct client intake; conduct client interviews; investigate facts and research legal issues; provide interpretation and translation services; maintain client files; assist in preparation of Unemployment Insurance Benefit application and Wage Claims; maintain client files and perform general clerical duties; assist in the preparation of legal actions and administrative hearings; and other duties as assigned.

NLSLA is one of Los Angeles County's leading public interest law offices and has been the primary legal aid program serving the cities of Burbank and Glendale and the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys for more than 50 years and the city of Pasadena and San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys since 2001. The NLSLA staff of 135+, including 55+ lawyers, provides free legal assistance to low-income individuals, families and groups in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing, health care, education, public benefits, economic and job development, immigrant rights, consumer rights and environmental justice. NLSLA headquarters is located in Glendale, CA with branch offices in Pacoima, Boyle Heights and El Monte.

Requirements: 

Qualifications:
Bilingual fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese required. Experience working with low-income community preferred. Must have one of the following: (1) paralegal certificate, (2) B.A. or B.S. degree with one (1) year experience working in a law office or other legal setting under the supervisor of a licensed attorney, or (3) high school degree with 3 years’ experience working in a law office or other legal setting under the supervision of a licensed attorney with a letter certifying the experience.
