Position Description: 

New York County Defender Services, one of New York City’s premiere public defender offices, is accepting applications for the position of Managing Attorney. NYCDS delivers high quality legal services to our clients in the borough of Manhattan and is responsible for handling one-fourth of Manhattan criminal court arraignments every year.

The Managing Attorney will be responsible for supervising the daily practice at NYCDS. Responsibilities include managing the supervisory staff, serving as the point person for all Office of Court Administration related matters and overseeing the intersection of our various practice areas. The Managing Attorney will report directly to the Director and Executive Director.

The successful applicant will have a demonstrated skill for trial practice and a commitment to the zealous representation of indigent accused persons.


- Currently a member in good standing of the New York State Bar;
- Possess strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills;
- Have at least 15 years of relevant experience;
- Have experience preparing “Requests for Proposals” and/or grant applications;
- Have experience managing financial budgets.
