LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK

FORECLOSURE PREVENTION PROJECT PAID SUMMER LAW CLERK

The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) is a publicly funded law office with five offices providing free civil legal services to low income individuals living in 16 counties in northeastern New York. Our current priorities are Support for Families, Preserving the Home, Maintaining Economic Stability, Maintaining Safety, Stability & Health, and Serving Populations with Special Vulnerabilities, Children's Advocacy and Delivery of Legal Services. LASNNY’s Foreclosure Prevention Project (FPP) provides legal assistance to low income homeowners facing foreclosure. In addition to mortgage foreclosures, the FPP assists eligible homeowners in tax foreclosure proceedings and post-foreclosure evictions, as well as land contract matters. FPP also assists tenants residing in foreclosed properties.

LASNNY is looking for a motivated law student or recent graduate who is committed to seeking fairness and justice for low income people confronted by foreclosure. The paid FPP law clerk will be based in our Albany Office, serving Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer and Schenectady Counties. The Law Clerk will work closely and collaboratively with experienced Foreclosure Defense attorneys. The clerk’s responsibilities will include but are not limited to: client contact; legal research and writing in multiple substantive areas of law including consumer law, real estate, banking, bankruptcy, trusts and estates, family and matrimonial, as well as civil procedure; document review and analysis; investigation; drafting legal documents and correspondence; assisting clients with loss mitigation applications; attending client interviews, meetings, and court appearances. Eligible students may also have an opportunity to practice under a student practice order. The Law Clerk will experience the collegiality and camaraderie of working in a public interest law firm.

Requirements: Current law student or recent graduate with excellent research, writing and communication skills. Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to furthering the legal rights of low income and underserved people. Applicant must possess an analysis that includes the Must be intelligent, hardworking, careful, reliable, have good judgment, attention to detail and be able to work independently. Proficient computer, administrative, reporting and data entry skills. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.

Schedule: Approximately 15 hours per week during the summer months. Specific schedule to be determined during business hours. LASNNY would consider a longer work week under the right circumstances. Could lead to continued part time clerkship in the Fall.

Salary: $15 per hour
