Position Description: 

The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY), seeks an experienced attorney to manage its Syracuse Office.

Job Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Attorney is responsible for the day-to-day management and supervision of the LASMNY Syracuse Office. Working in conjunction with other managers, the Managing Attorney will ensure that all intake and case work complies with agency guidelines, program priorities, and Legal Services Corporation requirements.

The duties of the Managing Attorney include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide supervision and professional development opportunities to staff attorneys, paralegals, and support staff in the LASMNY Syracuse Office and to other staff member under his/her supervision.

• Supervise the legal work of and conduct regular case reviews with case handlers in the LASMNY Syracuse Office.

• Assist the Executive Director in the recruitment and selection of staff.

• Serve as a signatory on checks and ensure the fiscal integrity of the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York’s funds.

• Work with community and bar groups as necessary.

• Assist the Executive Director when necessary in personnel and union relations matters.

• Assist the Executive Director and administrative staff in fiscal matters, including budget development and grant management.

• Assure staff compliance with requirements of all funding sources including the Legal Services Corporation

• Perform any other reasonable duties assigned by the Executive Director.

Requirements: 

Qualifications:
• Must be licensed to practice law in New York State.
• Must have a minimum of two years of legal experience, with substantive experience in legal issues affecting low-income clients.
• Prior experience providing direct supervision of attorneys and paralegals is preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communications skills are required.
• Must possess strong leadership skills and have a demonstrated ability to work independently, multi-task, and prioritize projects.
