Position Description: 

The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. is seeking to fill a staff attorney position in its Domestic Violence Unit. Candidates must be admitted to practice in New York State. The staff attorney will be responsible for providing a full range of legal representation and counseling to individuals facing domestic violence and matrimonial matters.

LASMNY program area covers thirteen counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Otsego. In addition, LASMNY operates a statewide Farmworker Law Project from its New Paltz office.

Job responsibilities: Provide direct and comprehensive legal services to eligible clients including advice, negotiation and litigation. The staff attorney will represent clients primarily in matrimonial cases with a further emphasis in family court matters. Additional areas of practice could include public benefits, housing and disability.

Salary depending on experience. Excellent fringe benefits.

Requirements: 

Qualifications: The successful candidate must be admitted to the New York State Bar. Trial experience is preferred. A commitment to professional growth, excellent organizational, problem solving and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for direct client services and commitment to social justice required. Other qualifying factors include: the nature and extent of prior legal experience, particularly in the areas of family law; knowledge and understanding of the legal problems and needs of the poor, prior experience in the client community or in other programs to aid the poor, ability to communicate with persons in the client community; and cultural similarity with the client community.
