For over 50 years, LAF has provided free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago. Each year LAF’s attorneys, volunteers, and staff help resolve legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, unfair evictions, and juvenile expungements. Our work impacts more than 35,000 people each year.
Position: LAF seeks a full time Staff Attorney for the Immigrants and Workers’ Rights Practice Group with a focus on helping individuals overcome legal obstacles to getting and/or keeping a job. This work includes employment law related matters, unemployment, wage theft, discrimination, labor based U-visas, labor trafficking, credentialing/occupational licensing, and driver’s license issues.
Responsibilities include without limitation:
• Manage an individual caseload and provide full and effective legal representation to individuals and/or groups
• Work collaboratively with LAF staff, students, and volunteers to provide comprehensive legal services
• Co-counsel cases across the practice group
• Interview eligible clients assess their legal problems
• Provide appropriate advice and referrals to outside agencies
• Train staff to identify the legal needs of clients with employment-related matters
• Attend trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of current legal issues surrounding employment law
• Assist with grant reporting requirements.
Qualifications: Applicants be a member of the Illinois Bar or have taken Illinois Bar by July 2018. The successful applicant will be collegial; committed to public interest legal services; have strong oral and writing skills; be highly organized; have a driver’s license and good driving record, and have team-centered work experience. Prior work experience with matters of employment law is a plus. Spanish proficiency or greater highly desirable.
