Assistant Federal Public Defender

We are accepting applications from experienced criminal defense attorneys for an Assistant Federal Public Defender position in our Eugene office.

The Eugene office of the Federal Public Defender – District of Oregon is a small, collegial office with a good professional relationship with the US Attorney’s office and the court. Home to the University of Oregon Ducks and the University of Oregon Law School, Eugene is known as “Track Town USA,” frequently hosts national and international track and field events, and is very bicycle and runner friendly. Residents of Eugene have excellent access to outdoor recreation activities: rock climbing and excellent hiking are within bicycling distance, and the Cascade Mountains and Oregon Coast are a short drive away, as is the world-class fly-fishing found on the McKenzie river.

Requirements: 

Applicant must be capable of immediately undertaking the defense of major criminal cases in the United States District Court, as well as in the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Applicant must be a graduate of an accredited law school and an active member in good standing of the bar in any state, territory or possession. Applicant must have recent, substantial criminal trial experience; be team-oriented; exhibit strong writing skills; as well as a commitment to criminal defense for all individuals, including those who may be facing the death penalty. Writing ability, federal court, and immigration law experience will be given preference. Spanish-language skills are also relevant for this position.

Starting salary commensurate with experience. Compensation also includes federal government employee benefits: paid federal holidays, paid vacation, paid sick leave, health and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. This position is “at-will,” excepted service, and does not carry the tenure rights of the competitive Civil Service. Salary is paid biweekly, payable only by direct deposit.
