Position Description: 

The Department of Public Defense (DPD) is renowned nationally for its excellent legal representation to indigent clients in the only county in the United States named after Martin Luther King Jr, one of the most influential civil rights leaders in our nations' history, King County. DPD provides legal representation to indigent clients in several practice areas, including felonies, misdemeanors, juvenile offenders, dependencies, involuntary commitment, civil commitment of sexually violent predators, and contempt of court. The department also works to address racial disproportionality in the criminal justice system, the collateral consequences of justice involvement, and other structural and/or systemic issues that undermine the rights of the criminally accused. It employs not only attorneys, but also skilled mitigation specialists, paralegals, investigators, and other support staff.

King County Department of Public Defense (DPD) is seeking a Communications Specialist IV to manage DPD's communications within the restrictions required by the Washington Rules of Professional Conduct. The successful candidate will be an experienced professional with strong communications, a proven background in storytelling and writing, expertise managing leadership communications, ability to think strategically, outstanding relationship-building skills, a demonstrated commitment to collaboration and capable of working in a fast-paced environment and juggling multiple assignments. Top-tier candidates will possess leadership skills, ability to manage projects and teams, understand how to build and foster effective relationships, communicate with transparency and clarity, and work in a complex and constantly evolving environment. This position reports to the Director of King County Public Defense.

Requirements: 

1.Demonstrated ability to write powerful stories, compose narratives and write reports in the appropriate tone for the intended audience.
2.Progressively responsible experience working with print, broadcast news and social media. Senior level communications or media work experience strongly preferred
3.Senior level experience working with Executive Leadership in a large, complex organization.
4.Knowledge of social media technologies and experience developing communication strategies using current and emerging technologies.
5.Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple programs and projects to meet numerous non-negotiable shifting deadlines.
6.Knowledge of principles of budgeting and program management
7.Skill in reading and interpreting laws, regulations and guidelines written by federal, state and local agencies Knowledge of local government and the political process
8.Public speaking skills
9.Decision-making and problem-solving skills
10.Skills in resolving conflict, making decisions, solving problems, collaborating and negotiating with colleagues and upper management
11.Skills in understanding and translating technical subject matter and terminology
12.Skills in setting priorities, influencing and persuading co-workers and others
13.Skills in organizing, prioritizing and managing multiple programs and projects to meet numerous non-negotiable deadlines
14.Skill in thinking strategically and listening effectively
15.Ability to research and analyze
16.Knowledge of legal issues, preferably public defense and / or holistic public defense systems, highly desired
17.King County and / or public defense communications experience highly desired
18.Knowledge of supervisory techniques and principles and collective bargaining agreements preferred
19.Supervisory skills preferred

Salary range: 
$85,015.42 - $107,762.10 annually
