Position Description: 

Manages legal intake and provides litigation and general support to Legal Director, Staff
Attorneys, Investigator, and cooperating attorneys.

Intake:
Under the supervision of the Legal Director, the Paralegal will:
 Analyze complaints about civil liberties and civil rights violations and recommend action
based on established criteria;
 Assist in case development, including factual research, legal research, interviews,
information gathering and analysis;
 Respond to intakes as directed;
 Train others on intake review;
 Oversee intake database and physical files for accuracy, currency, and completeness;
 Compile, analyze, and present statistical data and reports regarding intake and intake
response.

Litigation Support:
Under the supervision of the Legal Director, the Paralegal will:
 Format, prepare, serve, and file legal documents for federal and state litigation;
 Draft correspondence and coordinate with co-counsel, opposing counsel, clients, and
witnesses;
 Make all logistical arrangements for depositions, client meetings, and other events;
 Meticulously maintain electronic and physical case files and calendars.

Additional Support:
Under the supervision of the Legal Director, the Paralegal will:
 Coordinate all aspects of legal team events (e.g. securing locations, confirming speakers,
handling RSVPs and producing materials) for CLEs, workshops and trainings geared
toward attorneys and community advocates;
 Coordinate efforts to build relationships with new cooperating attorneys and develop pro
bono resources through targeted, pro-active outreach with appropriate law firm contacts;
 Manage recruitment, applications, orientation and evaluation of legal department interns
and volunteers.

Requirements: 

 A paralegal certificate from an accredited program, or equivalent experience in a law office
handling litigation in state and/or federal court.
 Experience preparing and filing legal papers in court (state and/or federal) and managing
discovery.
 Excellent computer skills, including databases, word processing, spreadsheets, email and
online communications.
 Experience with case management.
 Basic understanding of issues related to civil liberties, the Bill of Rights, and major civil rights
laws.
 Strong desire to advance the mission of the ACLU.
