Duties & Responsibilities
The Tenant Advocacy Project (TAP) at Harvard Law School has an opportunity for a part time (17.5h per week) Clinical Instructor (CI). The CI's responsibilities include close supervision of student casework as well as teaching and training students on issues of housing law. This individual develops materials and leads training sessions that occur several times each semester in the evening, as well as more informally. Will closely supervise and mentor students, reviewing every letter or email before it is sent, planning strategy for every important telephone call, and reviewing drafts of memorandum in preparation for each hearing, as well as direct and cross examination questions and closing arguments. Provides detailed feedback to students on all written material and debriefs with students after each hearing. The CI attends hearings in which TAP participates before a housing authority. This role also supervises the advice hotline work by reviewing the proposed answer a student develops after research and discussing strategy advice to give to the caller.
The Clinical Instructor supervises the TAP Program Administrator and communicates regularly with the Program Administrator and the TAP Student Board about a large range of administrative matters. Is primarily responsible for all aspects of the management of the TAP law office, including the system for checking conflicts, documenting case files, timely closing of cases, etc. Participates in every case intake decision.
The Clinical Instructor assists the Program Administrator in preparing the annual program budget and in responding to the many requests from the Office of Clinical Programs or HLS for data, reports and other information. Will interview applicants for summer student attorney positions and make hiring decisions. Provides the same level of intense supervision to two full-time summer students as is provided to HLS students during the school year.
The Clinical Instructor is knowledgeable about housing law, especially as it relates to TAP's area of work, and stays current on housing law (statutes and case law) and on the relevant housing regulations and policies of the housing authorities at which TAP practices.
This position reports to the Assistant Director and Assistant Dean, Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs. Supervises the Program Administrator and coordinates with and supports the Student Board.
Basic Qualifications
J.D. and admission to Massachusetts Bar, or eligibility to practice and supervise students under S.J.C. Rule 3.04 while pursuing admission. Minimum of 5 years of legal practice experience.
Additional Qualifications
Practice in the housing or legal services field preferred but other experience considered along with a willingness to learn TAP's area of law.
Successful teaching, mentoring, and student supervision experience or the demonstrated potential for such supervision is required. The successful candidate should be passionate about working with students and doing direct service work with low-income clients. Outstanding interpersonal skills and flexibility a must. Ability to work sensitively with a diverse population of clients, students, and staff is essential. Exceptional ethical standards, deft management skills, and outstanding writing and verbal skills required. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.

This is a term appointment currently expected to extend to 5 years from date of hire, subject to funding and departmental need.
