Position Description:

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm on Skid Row. We combat slum housing and develop strategies to end homelessness. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, our professional staff of 55 (including 30 attorneys) fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people who are disabled or homeless, people living with HIV/AIDS, and homeless veterans.

Position Description: ICLC is searching for a talented, full-time Attorney with prior SSI, SSDI or other disability benefits experience for a ground-breaking new project that will help homeless individuals with disabilities gain access to critical income-support benefits. This Project will provide technical assistance, training, and other support on disability benefits applications for homeless individuals throughout Los Angeles County.

This is a unique opportunity for an attorney to join an exciting new project that will positively impact thousands of individuals’ lives in Los Angeles. The Attorney will focus on providing technical assistance to our partner agencies and their case managers on SSI, SSDI and CAPI (Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants) applications. The Attorney will also lead trainings for case managers and other advocates on SSI, SSDI and CAPI and review completed applications.

The Attorney will work as part of a team and will share team responsibilities related to the Project, such as identifying systematic problems within the SSI/SSDI or CAPI application process and developing strategies to resolve them. This will likely include working directly with staff and leadership at the Social Security Administration and Department of Public Social Services in Los Angeles County. The Attorney may also represent clients in administrative hearings to challenge incorrect denials of SSI, SSDI or CAPI benefits. The Attorney may also participate in other projects related to improving these systems and may perform other duties as needed. The Attorney may also work closely with pro bono attorneys volunteering on this project.

Hiring Criteria: Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Organized and detail oriented. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and independently manage varied responsibilities. Ability to use good judgment, multitask and meet deadlines. Past experience developing and leading trainings and a proven ability to effectively work with non-attorney advocates. Significant experience working on public benefits-related cases strongly preferred, ideally including in-depth knowledge of SSI, SSDI and/or CAPI program rules. Membership in the California Bar or another State Bar required.

Compensation: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits.

How to Apply: Priority will be given to applications received by October 29, 2017. However, we will accept applications until the position is filled. To apply, please email your cover letter setting forth interest in the position, resume, and three references to Lisa Charles, Program Assistant, at [email protected].
