The Office of the Federal Defender for the Eastern District of Missouri has an opening for a Mitigation Specialist. The office operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, to provide services of the highest quality to indigent persons in federal criminal cases. The main office is located in Saint Louis, Missouri with a branch office in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. This is a full-time position with a focus on the Saint Louis office and some work assisting attorneys in Cape Girardeau.
The Mitigation Specialist will gather and summarize records and conduct interviews to create client social histories. They will use this information to develop mitigation themes and work with attorneys to present this information on the client’s behalf which may include video presentations. The position involves consulting with experts, managing relationships with clients and their families, as well as maintaining contacts with local social service providers to connect clients with needed services and inform client advocacy.
This is a full-time position with salary and benefits based on qualifications and experience. This position is subject to mandatory electronic transfer (direct deposit) participation for payment of net pay. This position is subject to funding.
Master’s Degree in Social Work preferred. At least two years of experience in the investigation and development of mitigation evidence or employment in the social work field is preferred as is a working knowledge of the criminal justice system. Excellent investigative, interviewing and writing skills required. Experience in videography and/or fluency in Spanish are pluses.
