NLADA bestowed the Justice John Paul Stevens Lifetime Achievement Award on U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the inaugural NLADA Leadership Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, June 27, at the historic Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.  Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens presented the Award to Justice Ginsburg in front of a standing ovation. After the award presentation, both Justices graciously participated in an in-depth Q & A session, with all questions posed by event attendees. The nearly 200 guests present were captivated as Justices Ginsburg and Stevens offered their opinions on issues ranging from specialized courts to civil right to counsel.

Justice Ginsburg also shared some characteristically-determined advice for young women in America: “Don’t take no for an answer. If it didn’t work today, tomorrow is another day.”

The celebratory Leadership Appreciation Luncheon convened a national network of dedicated leaders who are striving to set a standard of excellence and innovation in delivery of legal aid to America’s financially challenged. All attendees at the invite-only event joined NLADA in honoring the incalculable accomplishments of Justice Ginsburg’s life and career, which have, in the words of President Clinton, “repeatedly stood for the individual, the person less well-off, the outsider in society.” A steadfast advocate for women in the 1970s, and subsequently a staunch defender of civil rights after her appointment to the judiciary, Justice Ginsburg has made an extraordinary impact on the landscape of equal justice in America.
