As the nation’s oldest legal organization focusing on the civil rights of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Asian Americans Advancing Justice–Asian Law Caucus (Advancing Justice–ALC) is a leader in defending the interests of low-income immigrants. Since 1972, Advancing Justice–ALC has litigated high-profile cases and provided an array of services including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation. Our current program areas include national security and civil rights, immigrant rights, housing rights, criminal justice reform, workers’ rights, voting rights, and ASPIRE. We are a founding member of the national Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation.

Position summary: This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the next phase of growth for a 45-year-old civil rights organization on the front lines of racial, economic and immigrant justice. We are looking for a dynamic, talented non-profit leader who is committed to strengthening our institution and increasing the impact of our work in these challenging times. The Deputy Director will work closely with the Executive Director, the staff and the Board of Directors to advance our local to national organizational strategy. The strongest candidates will have deep connections to the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) and/or civil rights community and significant experience managing both people and programs.

Responsibilities:

Oversee programs and work with staff and ED to inform strategic direction setting;
Work with staff to evaluate the impact of our legal services, policy advocacy, communications and community empowerment strategies;
Manage all government contracts for legal services, totaling more than $900,000 this fiscal year;
Supervise program staff, communications staff, and government contracts manager;
Review press releases and external communications;
Represent Advancing Justice–ALC in the national Advancing Justice affiliation;
Partner with ED to support organizational development and relationship-building with external stakeholders including coalition partners, government officials, funders, and the press.
Qualifications:

BA; JD preferred
Experience in the social justice field and knowledge of civil rights issues impacting low-income API communities
Significant experience in supervising staff and leading projects and strategic initiatives, preferably in a legal setting
Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills
Detail-oriented and organized
Experience in creating external communication materials: policy briefs, FAQs, press releases and social media is a plus
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment where no two days may be the same, but where long-term projects must still be accomplished

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range for this position is commensurate with experience and is based on principles of internal equity. A full benefits package is included.
