Bet Tzedek seeks two attorneys to serve as AmeriCorps Equal Justice Works Elder Justice Fellows. A new initiative within the Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps program, this exciting new fellowship will combat elder abuse (financial, physical, and psychological) through a combination of outreach, education, and direct representation of victims of elder abuse. The positions are scheduled to begin in September 2016 and will last one year, but are renewable for a second year.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
· Represent senior clients in court proceedings to prevent or protect clients from various forms of elder abuse. Depending on client need, case load and the fellow’s interest, one of the fellowships will focus primarily upon clients seeking elder and dependent adult protective orders or conservatorships, while the other will focus on civil litigation involving elder financial abuse, real estate fraud, identity theft, and consumer fraud;
· Conduct community education and outreach presentations to seniors on various elder abuse topics, including physical, psychological, and financial abuse;
· Serve as part of an impact litigation team to remedy and prevent scams against the elderly;
· Work closely with Pro Bono team to place matters with pro bono attorneys, and train and mentor pro bono attorneys and law students handling elder abuse cases and other project work;
· Case management and grant compliance, including, but not limited to timely opening, coding, entry of case time, case reviews, etc.

SALARY
· Fellows receive annual living allowance, as well as financial support for housing, student loan repayment, and other permissible reimbursable living expenses. Additionally, Fellows receive an education award, health insurance, and other benefits.

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS
· Active member of the California State Bar in good standing, or licensed in another state and eligible to practice under CRC Rule 9.45 (Registered Legal Services Attorneys) (required)
· A demonstrated commitment to public interest work. Experience in elder abuse, including consumer rights, debtors’ rights, home equity/title fraud or elder financial abuse preferred
· Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred
· Note: all AmeriCorps Fellows must pass a criminal background check (conviction for murder or sex offender status are automatic bars to service)
