The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County (LASSMC) seeks an energetic attorney with a passion for health equity and social justice advocacy to work in our Health Consumer Center (HCC). The HCC is part of the statewide Health Consumer Alliance. The HCC provides direct legal services to low income San Mateo County residents in the area of health care coverage and access to health services under public and private health insurance programs. In addition, the HCC works with state and local partners to provide outreach and education and to engage in systemic advocacy to eliminate barriers to health coverage and health care.

A non-LSC funded legal services program with a 50 year history of collaboration and innovative programs, LASSMC is able to engage in class action litigation and to provide assistance regardless of immigration status in areas of basic need including health, housing, safety-net benefits, and freedom from violence.
Responsibilities:
Conduct intake interviews and research, advise, and represent low-income San Mateo County residents on a wide variety of health matters, including access to coverage under Medi-Cal, Covered CA and other public and private health insurance programs and access to essential health care services. Pursue all appropriate legal strategies, including litigation, in accordance with Legal Aid’s priorities. Engage in outreach and education efforts in partnership with local community groups in order to educate low-income consumers about their rights to health insurance coverage and timely, affordable and high quality health care. Participate in local and state-wide strategy calls and health task forces to develop HCC priorities and pursue strategies for eliminating health discrepancies and barriers to coverage and care for low-income communities. Assist with grant reporting and writing grant proposals as needed.
Required Qualifications:
Active membership in the California State Bar or admitted in another state and eligible to practice in California for 3 years under the California State Bar rules for the Registered Legal Services Attorney Program (must pass CA bar)
Demonstrated commitment to public interest law
Excellent writing, public speaking, and communication skills
Ability to drive and access to a car
Preferred:
Familiarity with health care law and/or public benefits law generally
Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin or Tagalog
Bi-cultural background/experience
Experience working with community-based organizations
