Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit regional law firm that provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income persons and groups in western Ohio, seeks a bright, creative, hardworking attorney for its Toledo office.
The Attorney will work with ABLE’s Education Practice Group providing legal representation to low-income children and parents in education cases. The Education Practice Group advocates for appropriate and meaningful educational opportunities for children in poverty, including a focus on discipline cases and disrupting the school to prison pipeline, particularly for African American and Latino youth who are disproportionately impacted by these policies. Advocacy will also include special education cases seeking to obtain appropriate and inclusive services for children with special needs. The Attorney will be expected to work closely with community and parent groups, handle administrative complaints and participate in systemic litigation. In addition to the Education Practice Group, the Attorney may also be assigned as needed to another of ABLE’s substantive practice groups.
The Attorney must have excellent interpersonal skills and be experienced in working in collaborative environments. Membership in Ohio Bar or ability to be admitted by motion or temporary certification is required. Excellent legal and communication skills; experience with case management, Microsoft Office and GIS mapping software preferred. Ability to relate well with low income clients and commitment to legal services to the poor required. Minimum of two years legal experience, including federal litigation experience, experience in education law or poverty law in general is highly preferred. Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish is helpful.
