Position Description: 

ICLC seeks a full-time Staff Attorney for a six month position with ICLC’s Homelessness Prevention Project. The Staff Attorney’s position will focus on economic improvement through legal representation for previously homeless individuals. The position may be extended beyond the initial six month period. The position is part of a Rapid Re-Housing for Homeless Adults (RRHA) program, which ICLC has undertaken in collaboration with Los Angeles based homelessness service providers. Through the RRHA program, service providers are able to offer limited term rental subsidies and supportive services to adults experiencing homelessness in order to return them to stable permanent housing. As part of this collaboration, ICLC will provide capacity building and mentoring to case managers. ICLC will also provide legal advice and representation to formerly homeless individuals. The Staff Attorney’s legal duties will be broad and include seeking to clear low-level tickets, warrants, or fines; assisting with government benefits applications and appeals; assisting with applications for pension and disability compensation benefits; and helping clients to access VA healthcare. The position may also include legal advice and representation in other areas such as resolving landlord/tenant disputes that might lead to homelessness (e.g., illegal rent increases or relocation benefits); tackling substandard housing
conditions and resolving pre-eviction notices. The Staff Attorney may also participate in other projects related to ensuring economic improvement to individuals and may perform other duties as needed.

Requirements: 

Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to interact with a wide range of clients in a kind, appropriate manner and ability to interact with a wide range of clients utilizing client-centered lawyering. Ability to quickly build trust and rapport with low-income tenants. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently and as part of a team. Ability to use good judgment, multitask and meet deadlines. Knowledge of public benefits law a plus. Excellent negotiation skills. Must be admitted to practice law. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
