Position Description: 

The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY) has a paralegal position in Utica, New York, split between LASMNY’s Pro Bono Program and its HelpLine Intake Program.

For the Pro Bono Program, the paralegal will be responsible for: supervising pro bono and pro se clinics in Oneida County and surrounding counties and requires travel; recruit and recognize pro bono attorneys; maintain pro bono community legal education files; identify and refer appropriate cases for pro bono representation; manage pro bono caseload, including clinic and extended service cases; and collaborate with staff, local bar associations, and other service providers to develop and enhance pro bono programs within service area. The paralegal will report to the Director of Pro Bono Programs.

For the HelpLine Intake Program, the paralegal will be responsible for: answering telephone and walk-in requests for legal services in a timely fashion; screens for eligibility, including income, resources, citizenship status, conflicts of interest, and special programs; for each eligible applicant, creates a client intake sheet in the Kemp’s Case Management system and forwards cases to HelpLine attorney staff, pro bono program, or extended service advocates as appropriate; for each walk-in, obtains a signed citizenship statement or eligible alien documentation; gather documents brought in by clients, scans documents to appropriate electronic client file folder, and notifies the assigned advocate; and consults with the HelpLine Managing Attorney regarding eligibility and referral issues.

A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel is required.

Requirements: 

The following factors, among others, are considered as qualifications for the paralegal position: academic training and performance; the nature and extent of prior paralegal experience; knowledge and understanding of the legal problems and needs of the poor; prior working experience in the client community or in other programs to aid the poor; ability to communicate with persons in the client community, and cultural similarity with the client community.
