Position Description: 

Virginia Defenders – Indigent Defense Commission (IDC) is seeking an experienced, dynamic criminal defense attorney to serve as the Chief Public Defender for the newly created Prince William County Public Defender Office. This is a unique opportunity to recruit, hire, train, and supervise attorneys and staff dedicated to our mission of protecting and defending the rights and dignity of clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy.

Duties:
The Public Defender is responsible for serving as a role model and teacher of zealous, high-quality legal advocacy and the overall supervision of the office. Duties will include working with supervising attorneys to provide continuous training, support and performance management for attorneys and staff. Administrative responsibilities include providing input and carefully managing the office budget and ensuring all required administrative reports and documentation are timely submitted.

Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (J.D) and Virginia State Bar admission or eligibility for admission by waiver, extensive criminal defense experience, comprehensive knowledge of Virginia Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and the Standards of Practice for Indigent Defense Counsel, considerable knowledge of management principles, demonstrated ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff, actively manage employee work performance and a demonstrable commitment to quality indigent defense representation are required.

Preferred Qualifications
Significant experience working as an attorney in a Public Defender Office or a demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of the accused and advocating for fairness in the criminal justice system. Experience supervising attorneys and staff preferred.

Salary range: 
$120,342.00 + potential locality supplement + state benefits
