Latino Memphis has an immediate opening for a Staff Attorney and is seeking a qualified and dedicated bilingual legal professional to join our Derechos legal team.

Job Classification: Staff Attorney for Latino Memphis’ Legal Program - Derechos

Salary range: $45,000 - $48,000

Full-Time Exempt plus benefits (employment benefit offerings include medical, vision, dental, simple IRA, life insurance, paid time off and more, detailed in the employee handbook).

Summary:

Latino Memphis’ legal program, “Derechos”, represents clients in immigration court and before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Types of Cases We Represent:

Adjustment of Status
Asylum and Withholding of Removal
DACA Renewal
Petitions for Alien Relative
U-Visa petitions for those who have been victims of crime
T-Visa petitions for those who have been victims of human trafficking
Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Self-Petitions.

The Staff Attorney will provide low-cost and pro-bono legal representation to individuals in the Memphis Immigration Court, and before USCIS to more effectively advocate for them in cancellation of removal, asylum, SIJS cases, and other forms of relief. Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:

Handle caseload providing direct representation of individuals in immigration and state court proceedings
Conduct thorough intakes for clients including screening clients for trauma, abuse, and trafficking
Prepare applications for USCIS and EOIR

Make client referrals for additional services, as appropriate
Assume administrative responsibilities including timekeeping, case management and other tasks related to program compliance and other duties as assigned
The attorney is expected to not only represent clients in immigration matters but to identify needs and issues during that representation that can be referred to Latino Memphis’s other programs and partners so as to holistically serve our clients and their families.

Requirements: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Possess Juris Doctorate and be licensed (Tennessee preferred but not required)
Experience or familiarity in immigration law
Fluent in Spanish (written and verbal) preferred but not required
