Organization: The Battered Women's Justice Project (BWJP) is a national resource center on the civil and criminal justice system responses to intimate partner violence (IPV). Under federal grants, BWJP conducts trainings on related issues, publishes policy analyses, and provides on-site consultation to jurisdictions around the country seeking to improve victim safety and offender accountability. Responsibilities: Supervised by the Director of the BWJP SAFeR Project
1. Participate in the development and dissemination of the SAFeR approach to custody decision-making in cases involving intimate partner violence.
2. Conduct trainings around the country on SAFeR for professionals engaged in custody decisions: attorneys, judges, custody evaluators, GALs, mediators, etc. and to advocates who assist DV victims in civil and family court procedures.
3. Provide technical assistance and consultations to communities seeking to more effectively assess and account for the context of the violence and related safety issues in crafting custody/visitation plans.
4. Monitor legal and public policy developments around the country which could positively or negatively impact civil justice responses to IPV victims and their families.
5. Research and write articles on innovative practices and emerging public policy issues in the field of family law and domestic violence.
6. Provide technical assistance and information to callers on wide range of topics related to the civil and criminal justice response to domestic violence.
7. Participate in BWJP trainings around the country as needed.
8. Maintain accurate records for reporting to funders about all technical assistance activities.
9. Attend staff meetings and trainings, as required.
This is a FT exempt position preferably based in the Minneapolis office.
1. 5+ years experience working with the family court system and extensive recent experience related to cases involving intimate partner violence.
2. Demonstrated experience in developing and conducting trainings and presentations. Knowledge of adult learning principles.
3. Demonstrated experience in developing legal policy analysis and writing articles for legal and non-legal audiences.
4. Knowledge of the range of legal and social issues that affect IPV victims, especially women of color, immigrant women, and other underserved groups.
5. Excellent communication and writing skills with both legal and non-legal audiences.
6. Ability to work as part of a team. Creative and strategic thinker. Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse groups of people.
7. Ability to travel extensively.
8. Comfortable with word processing, legal research and database software.
