Appellate Advocates is a nonprofit public defender organization, based in New York City, providing high-quality representation of individuals who have been convicted of crimes in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island and cannot afford private lawyers. We are a group of attorneys from diverse backgrounds who are experienced in criminal law and believe in fighting for every person’s constitutional right to a fair trial and in working to overturn unjust convictions and sentences. A significant part of our practice involves representation of non-citizen defendants on appeal and in other post-conviction proceedings focused on ameliorating immigration consequences. We are seeking a staff attorney with a demonstrated commitment to protecting immigrants’ rights to assist with our representation of non-citizens in the New York State criminal courts. Applicants should have a background in immigration, preferably with the intersection of immigration and criminal law, who can

  1. directly represent non-citizen clients seeking state post-conviction relief through motion practice and negotiation of immigration-safe dispositions, and
  2. advise other staff attorneys regarding the immigration consequences of criminal convictions and the needs in general of our non-citizen clients.
