Position Description: 

Community Legal Aid, Inc. (CLA), the non-profit organization providing free civil legal services to low-income and elderly clients in central and western Massachusetts, seeks a staff attorney who will be based in CLA's Fitchburg office. The staff attorney will work on a wide variety of cases involving public benefits, including TAFDC, EAEDC, SNAP, MassHealth, unemployment compensation, and Emergency Assistance shelter. The attorney may also assist elders with legal matters that affect their health, safety, and well-being. The attorney will have significant client contact, will engage in community outreach and education in north Worcester County, and will work closely with community partners. The attorney will spend at least one day each week in CLA's Worcester office and will need reliable transportation. Some grant reporting may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Massachusetts Bar, or eligible to sit for next Massachusetts Bar examination, or entitled to practice under a Massachusetts practice rule. Fluency in Spanish or Vietnamese strongly preferred. Prior legal experience with low-income or elderly clients also strongly preferred, as is administrative advocacy experience on behalf of people seeking state and/or federal benefits. Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities, strong interpersonal skills, and an ability to work in a collaborative setting are important.
