Position Description: 

The Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center (APALRC) located in Washington, D.C. is seeking a staff attorney to direct its New Americans Campaign (NAC) program to assist lawful permanent residents through the naturalization process.
The APALRC is a non-profit legal services organization dedicated to advancing the legal and civil rights of Asian Pacific Islanders in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia through legal services, education, and advocacy. The mission of the APALRC is to provide linguistically accessible and culturally appropriate legal services to low-income Asian Pacific Islander immigrants to ensure their access to government services and the legal system to protect and enforce their rights and to seek full participation in American society. The APALRC provides legal services in a wide range of legal issues including abuse prevention, employment, family, housing, immigration, public assistance and community development matters.

The New American Campaign (http://newamericanscampaign.org/) brings together networks of legal service providers, faith-based organizations, businesses, foundations and community leaders to streamline access to naturalization services, to enable more permanent residents qualified to become U.S citizens to take the step toward attaining citizenship. The staff attorney will be the lead for the APALRC’s NAC program.

Requirements: 

Qualifications:

• 1-3 years of experience in the practice of immigration law.
• Licensed to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction is required. License to practice in D.C., Maryland or Virginia preferred.
• Demonstrated commitment in public interest law and social justice advocacy, experience working with immigrants, low-income individuals and those with limited English proficiency, and with a legal services organization highly desirable.
• Commitment to teamwork, demonstrated ability in community outreach, coalition building, working with volunteers, organizing workshops strongly preferred.
• Experience working with Asian immigrants and fluency in an Asian language, particularly Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese), Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hindi or Urdu strongly preferred.

Tasks:

• Coordinate and attend outreach events to promote U.S. citizenship and the NAC in metropolitan D.C.
• Conduct information sessions regarding the benefits of U.S. citizenship and the NAC in metropolitan D.C.
• Recruit and train pro bono attorneys and law students on the citizenship process to assist at monthly citizenship application workshops.
• Coordinate and conduct citizenship application workshops in metropolitan D.C.
• Maintain partnerships with local government, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations and other entities to promote U.S. citizenship and the NAC.
• Represent individuals seeking U.S. citizenship at USCIS.
• Attend bi-annual NAC conference.

Salary range:
