Position Description: 

The Montgomery County Office of the Public Defender is accepting applications for the position of Investigator/Mitigation specialist. The Montgomery County Office of the Public Defender has over 40 attorneys who represent adults and juveniles in criminal matters through trial, sentencing, and appeals. Clients receive collaborative representation through a team of dedicated professionals who specialize in criminal and juvenile defense. We provide the highest quality representation to our clients and prioritize a holistic, client centered, and community oriented practice with the ultimate goals of securing the best possible outcomes in our clients’ cases, ameliorating the conditions that led to their involvement in the justice system, and improving the overall outcomes for their lives.

The essential duties of the Investigation/Mitigation Specialist include:

A comprehensive and exhaustive investigation of the criminal matter and the client’s family and social background;
Gathering of records, reports, and other documentary materials;
Locating and interviewing lay and expert witnesses;
Reviewing and analyzing discovery and other case documentation;
Crime scene investigation and recreation;
Preparing comprehensive and exhaustive fact and life history chronological summaries, written memoranda, and other reports;
Testifying in court as needed;
Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with individuals and agencies that interact with our office.

Requirements: 

The successful candidate for this position must have a college degree. A law degree is highly preferred, but not required. Experience with mental health or social work issues is also highly preferred, but not required. The applicant must have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to engage with and establish rapport with people from a variety of different backgrounds. The applicant must be able to work independently while maintaining regular and effective communication with members of the team. The applicant must possess the ability to analyze and evaluate facts, evidence and related information, and engage in creative thinking and problem solving. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, with willingness to travel within and outside the jurisdiction, including travel to courts and various correctional institutions. Spanish speakers will be strongly considered.
