Conducts investigations related to suspected violations of Federal, State, or local laws to prevent or solve crimes.

Nature of Work
Detectives and criminal investigators gather facts and collect evidence for criminal cases. Some are assigned to interagency task forces to combat specific types of crime. They conduct interviews, examine records, observe the activities of suspects and participate in raids or arrests. Detectives usually specialize in investigating one type of violation such as homicide or fraud. They are assigned cases on a rotating basis and work on them until an arrest and conviction is made or until the case is dropped. They provide assistance in criminal and civil liability cases, insurance claims and fraud cases, child custody and protection cases, missing- person cases and premarital screening. They are sometimes hired to investigate individuals to prove or disprove infidelity. Detectives and criminal investigators also perform various other types of surveillance or searches. To verify facts such as an individual's income or place of employment, they may make phone calls or visit a subject's workplace. In other cases, especially those involving missing persons and background checks, investigators interview people to gather as much information as possible about an individual. Sometimes investigators perform work that must be "undercover" in order to get information or to observe a subject inconspicuously. Most detectives and investigators are trained to perform physical surveillance, which may be high tech or low tech. They may observe a site, such as the home of a subject, from an inconspicuous location or a vehicle. Using photographic and video cameras, binoculars, cell phones and GPS systems, detectives gather information on an individual. Surveillance can be time consuming. The duties of detectives and criminal investigators change depending on the needs of their clients.
JOB EXPECTATIONS:
The Investigator: Works independently to investigate the facts of a case and to assist the attorney in developing a defense for clients charged with crimes in New Mexico.

Employees investigate reported violations and obtain statements regarding investigated issues; collect information involving agreements, documents, financial records, physical aspects, and other evidence relating to corporations and individuals being investigated; investigate and reply to correspondence regarding hearings, accidents, and other legal matters; cooperate with and assist enforcement agencies and may testify in courts or at hearings; review reports of investigations to ensure completeness and proper application of the governing laws or regulations; conduct tactical analysis complex criminal cases; resolve jurisdictional problems; and may serve as lecturer for higher education programs.
Collective Bargaining: This position may be covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
