Organization Information: Housing and Economic Rights Advocates, Oakland, CA. Position Description: Full Time Staff Attorney– Housing and Economic Rights Advocates (HERA). HERA seeks a full-time bilingual attorney to work with us in helping low income homeowners facing the possibility of loss of their homes in Alameda County, California.

In collaboration with HERA’s experienced attorneys, the Staff Attorney will provide legal services to low and moderate income homeowners on a wide range of issues threatening homeownership, including: mortgage foreclosure, predatory mortgage lending and servicing, home improvement scams, and property tax and code enforcement liens. Duties include interviewing and conducting intake, document collection and analysis, advising homeowners on their legal rights, negotiating with mortgage lenders and other creditors to preserve homeownership, assisting with administrative claims, and litigating claims in state and federal court.

Requirements: 

This position requires strong oral and written communication skills, as well as negotiation skills and attention to detail. Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences are preferred. Must be bilingual or have substantial proficiency in either Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, or Korean in addition to English.
CA Bar admittance or CA bar pending required. Previous exposure to the subject area of mortgage lending practices, home retention for homeowners and other relevant experience is desirable but not necessary.
