Chief Counsel for Civil Programs

The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA), founded in 1911, America’s oldest and largest nonprofit association devoted to excellence in the delivery of legal services to those who cannot afford counsel, seeks a Chief Counsel for Civil Programs. The Chief Counsel for Civil Programs reports to the Vice President, Civil Legal Services and is responsible for a wide range of activities designed to support NLADA’s Civil Legal Services Division (Division) and its civil members, including serving as counsel and advisor to members on regulatory and other legal matters; engaging in resource development and grants management for the Division; collaborating with and advocating before a variety of entities within the civil legal aid community; developing policy positions for NLADA in conjunction with member committees and participating in Division initiatives as determined by the NLADA Board, Civil Policy Group and by the Division itself.  The position is critical to the implementation of the mission and vision of NLADA and the civil legal aid and client communities.

Qualified candidates must be attorneys admitted to practice before the highest court of a state, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

This position requires a minimum of ten years of overall experience in the provision of civil legal assistance and experience with evaluation and assessment of legal work and management systems; management and supervision experience in civil legal assistance is preferred. It also requires extensive knowledge of or experience with civil legal aid system and delivery issues and an understanding of the most pressing civil legal needs of low-income communities and experience in developing strategies to address them. Excellent research skills, strong organizational skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to handle deadlines, the ability to work autonomously and in teams, the ability to travel, and a strong commitment to the mission and goals of NLADA are required.
